The Cassowary. Cassowaries are amazing creatures. They are the third biggest birds in the world. Cassowaries have only 3 claws and most birds have 4. Their middle claw is the biggest and it can cut you open and kill you! It has a big horn type thing on its head that is flexible and it bends. There are 3 types of cassowaries: a southern cassowary, northern cassowary, and dwarf cassowary. We saw the southern cassowary which lives in Queensland and Guinea . the other two kinds just live in Guinea. they are extremely endangered. we saw 6 cassowaries 4 of them were chicks and the other two were fully grown males. to tell the difference between the male and the female is the chicks. The chicks are always with the father.

This is the first male we saw . There was a very young chick with this one but we couldn't catch it in the photo

This is the second male we saw. it is about ten years of age and they can live up to 60 or 70 so he didnt have any chicks yet.

These are the last ones we saw . There were three chicks in the middle of the road but there wasn't any father.

This is the cassowary poop. The big chunks are the seeds of the fruit they eat. Dont worry we didnt touch the poop the tour guide did. I hope you all learned about cassowaries!
Dear Simi,
I bet this post is yours. I have been trying to send a message for the last few days. The blog is a little temperamental at times and other times hard to access! Maybe because so many people are checking it out.
I loved vey the pics of the Cassowary and the chicks. The adult male’s Head/neck is so colorful like a male peacock. This post was a real treat for me. I learned so much. My Cooper Wilderness tour was cancelled because of the Cyclone rains and I’m glad you took me on tour!
I just hope that tour guide washed his/her hands.....
