48 hours in Kangaroo Island: Part 1

Our day started in Adelaide and we drove two hours down the Fleurieu peninsula to get to the Port Jervis for the car ferry. The scenery was awesome- wineries, beach, hills, cattle and even a few kangaroos. The ferry ride was 1 hour long and then we were at Kangaroo Island- ready to see Kangaroos!

But first, Mom and Rita auntie insisted that we stop at a winery for pizza (but it was too early for Pizza- so it was just wine). We entertained ourselves by jumping up and down with Australia (the whole continent) in the background.

Doesn't dad look like an ape?

Then we finally started driving through the island- looking for Kangaroos everywhere. We saw 4 but they were dead. But we stopped at Seal Bay- take a look at these pictures.

And then, we stopped at the Raptor center for a really neat 1 hour bird show. Simi got to pet a Barn Owl and hold a Laughing Kookaburra.

After the raptor tour, we went to a nocturnal tour in Hanson Bay. Finally, we saw some Kangaroos- and plenty of them. We also saw wallabies, koalas, a possum and a family of geese. One of the koalas was holding a baby koala. It was so cute. Then, we had to drive home in the dark and in the road, we saw more possums. We had to drive really carefully or else we could have hit an animal. The guide told us that if we hit a kangaroo, we should stop make sure it didn't have a baby in the pouch that was still alive. That made dad drive really slow.

Here is the koala with the joey! ( joey is also a baby koala!)

Dear Kirin,

KI truly is a special place! I am glad you were able to do and see so much in a jam packed 2 days! The pics are great...especially of you and Sim jumping in the air. Too bad about Dudleys. I think you would have approved of their pizza. So many vegetable toppings. Can't wait to hear about the Owl experience from Simi.

The hardest things about KI are roadkill and having to leave the island. I didn't know that a baby Koala was also a Joey. Interesting.

Looking Forward to Part 2...
