Earlier, we did a Balinese cooking class, which was so fun. We made all kinds of Indonesian dishes and then had a HUGE feast. Above is our finished product. Now, lets go through the process.

For the pictures above-

Left: We first learned how to make coconut oil and coconut milk. They are both rather painstaking to make as well as time consuming. In Bali, they use coconut oil instead of vegetable/canola oil. They also use coconut milk instead of regular milk. Simi is grading some coconut to make these products.

Middle: The ingredients we will use.

Right: They put the name of the cooking class on the towel. How cute!

After that, we chopped and sliced our vegetables to prepare for the cooking.

We made some sauce to go with our food. A peanut sauce and two Indonesian sauces- a Sambal and a Bumbu Bali. We had to grind them the old fashion way!

Ketut(the teacher who is very funny) teaches Simi how to make her peanut sauce!

Ketut's wife is helping me fry some tofu and tempeh:

We put together the satays, we rolled up some mushrooms in a banana leaf, and we made Mie Goreng(Indonesian fried noodle).

We had a competition with mom and Kirin on one side and Dad and Simi on the other!!

Here is our final product. We each couldn't finish the meal. Dad can't wait to show off his new Indonesian cooking skills in Rochester. Who is coming over? Anyway, we made a veggie curry, tofu and tempeh sate, soup, noodles, and grilled mushroom in Banana Leaf. It was filled with flavor. We usually just have Mie Goreng(fried noodle) and Nasi Goreng(fried rice), so it was great to have some variety.

Other than the camel ride, this was the most fun experience on our trip. We are looking forward to doing more cooking classes!

Hi Kirin,

The food looks incredible! Too bad you couldn’t take the rest with you. I’m normally a bit 👈 so-so on tofu and tempeh, but sign me up for these dishes. Looks terrific and just as appetizing as the Kyoto Tofu, but spicer and richer. Which dish was your favorite? Simi is getting taller...could it be all that coconut rice? Looks like mom was falling asleep 😴 grinding spices! 👀😂. You all look great and what a fun outing! A great alternative to bread!!! What was your desert? Any fried plantains or mango sticky rice...Yummy! That was for your mom! 😉
